In 1865, pharmacist James Lofthouse of the fishing port of
Fleetwood, England could never have dreamed of the popularity
that his Fisherman's Friend lozenges have now achieved in
over 125 countries around the world. He developed the lozenges
to solve the problem of liquid syrups whose glass bottles
would break on the decks of Fleetwood's fishing boats in rough
weather.
The
lozenges were very effective and the townsfolk would come
into the small pharmacy and ask for a packet of the "fisherman's
lozenges", from which the name "Fisherman's Friend"
was born.
Over the next 98 years the lozenges continued to be sold
exclusively in the family pharmacy until 1963 when Doreen
Lofthouse the wife of James Lofthouse's grandson began delivering
packets of "Fisherman's Friend" lozenges to stores
throughout Fleetwood and the surrounding area.
Popularity of the lozenges continued to grow and in 1969
production was relocated into a separate factory in Fleetwood.
In
1975, as a personal favour a distributor in Norway placed
an order for 1 case of lozenges... the first export order.
Distributed in Canada by TFB & Associates Limited since
1988, FISHERMAN'S FRIEND is now Canada's favourite throat
lozenge in outlets from Victoria, British Columbia to St.
John's, Newfoundland.
